Google calendar is the today’s standard for many users, especially when they use an Android phone. Data are synchronized easily with the service and they got their trusted calendar system for them at all times.
But what about views? The standard daily, weekly, monthly and agenda views may be alright when you’re on your home computer or using a desktop application. But not quite on your Android phone. Calendar views are very limited and you cannot have the same global view of your forthcoming events, especially during weekly and monthly reviews.
Jorte by Johospace can be a huge help regarding this and other calendaring issues most GTD users are facing. It’s a free Android application which can be used as a standalone calendar/task system or use your existing Google Calendars to give you more choices.
There are more views for your calendar: Weekly (two styles), two weeks and monthly. You can have notes/tasks on or off for each view, and slide left and right to change viewing dates. Just like viewing an analog desktop calendar/organizer, something that a lot of us got used to work with.
Jorte can synchronize your Google Tasks also, or you can have temporary notes at the bottom of your calendar. And there are some widgets too. Wait, they are a lot (I’ve counted more than 40) of various views and sizes, and you can select which ones you need from the application’s settings screen. The application can be also installed to the SD card, but you will lose access to those widgets.
There is also a great search function, import and export to csv capability and plenty of styling options through themes and fonts, so you can customize it to your own taste.
I think Jorte is the most complete calendar application there is for the Android platform, and it’s a must for GTD users who divide their system between their calendar and task lists. Just plug it in your existing Google Calendar data and flick through your life’s pages like your good-ol’paper organizer.
