DGT GTD for Android

image

If you are an Android user and into Getting Things Done, chances are you have heard of this little application from dgtale called DGT GTD.

This little-great app, even was not developed by a big company, it’s so intuitive and complete, that more known companies and well paid developers have a lot to learn from it.

DGT GTD is a complete task management solution for Android and free so far, which can work standalone on your phone or synchronize data with Toodledo, one of the most popular and stable web services for task management. For Toodledo synchronization to work, you need to download an additional plugin app for DGT, which is also free.

The application uses the standard Toodledo elements to work, along with notebooks and goals and adds some unique ones, like projects (in addition to Toodledo folders), checklists, emails, SMS and phone calls.

The user interface is really well designed, a fact that I will stress as hard as I can, because for a mobile application using all Toodledo fields, things can get really messy when users try to create or edit data.

There is a home view, displaying all the basic locations or lists: The inbox, all items, hotlist, starred and completed items. There are some useful additions as well, like active alarms and recently added and modified items as well as a project and checklist list if you use those.

Sliding to the right you can see your whole folder list and to the left your goals. All lists have nice and big counters next to them which turn to a double counter if there are overdue items.

The lists themselves are well designed too, and each item bares a colored label of its context and folder making it easy to the users to track down items.

Tasks are very easy to be added, either by quick or normal addition and there are some cool widgets too, one of them for quick adding tasks and one even cooler for displaying a counter of your hotlist items.

But that’s not all about navigation into lists. There are filters that can be turned on or off, for filtering contexts, status and tags, a feature that may take a while to used to, since all those filters are global to the whole application. Some users might find the result a bit overwhelming or complicated, considering a big number of tasks filed into different statuses, contexts and tags, but all it takes it’s a simple plan to organize stuff in a specific way.

Recurring items and reminders work great, and users can also use start dates to see specific tasks when they need to, as in any complete task management solution. There are lots of settings that can be tweaked so you can customize the application to your needs.

The synchronization with Toodledo works great and I’ve never had a single problem as long as I’ve been using this app, even though the product is in alpha stage. The only thing that cannot be synchronized with Toodledo is the projects which is a custom item type, so use them with caution if you need them, or use standard folders instead.

In conclusion, if you own an Android device and want to work with your trusted GTD system, this app is a must have. Combining the already great features of Toodledo and a well-designed interface, DGT is a hit, especially for experienced GTD users.
