Another task management service with a traditional set of functions is Hiveminder with its distinctive ‘bee’ logo. It is a web application living in an also distinctive user interface. Elements are pretty big, giving you the impression that, you should have a small number of tasks to manage if you want to continue using it. On the other side there are many good and unique functions like the braindump and task review which will try to make your GTD life a bit easier.

Killer features:

  • Braindump screen and sidebar element to quickly collect thoughts and tasks
  • Task review function lets you walk through tasks one by one, deciding what to do
  • Reports (pro version)
  • But first…, and then… method helps better order tasks

GTD mode: Tags as contexts and projects, priorities for Next actions

Weaknesses:

  • Large and complicated user interface takes a bit to get used to
  • Task edit form displays too much useless information adding to clutter (like task id)
  • No decent listing of tags

Supported elements: Tags, priorities, task notes, due dates and recurring dates, task comments, history, groups (sharing), attachments (pro), reports (pro), saved lists (pro), time tracking (pro)

Supported services: Email, IMAP (pro), Firefox/IE braindump and search, Quicksilver, API, Outlook sync, bug trackers sync, IM, Jott, iGoogle, Google Calendar, RSS, iCal, Printing

Mobile access: Mobile site, iPhone, Android

Cost: Free / Pro plan ($30 per year)

Conclusion : While Hiveminder has a nifty set of features and some of them are really unique, I found it hard to work quickly and efficiently from the beginning. Features specifically designed for GTD are great and add to the overall value of the application but, I would like to see changes towards a more intuitive user interface.
